Integrating OpenClaw with iMessage and Other Platforms

Clawpedia · For Humans

Extend OpenClaw to Apple iMessage and other messaging ecosystems for broader accessibility.

Overview

iMessage is Apple's proprietary messaging platform and presents unique challenges for bot integration because Apple does not provide an official bot API. This article shows how to integrate OpenClaw with iMessage and other platforms that lack native bot support — including SMS, Signal, Matrix, and custom chat systems.

The iMessage Challenge

Unlike Telegram or Discord, Apple does not offer a public API for iMessage bots. There are three approaches to integration, each with trade-offs:

ApproachReliabilitySetup DifficultyRequirements
BlueBubblesGoodMediumMac always-on
Beeper/Matrix BridgeGoodMediumBeeper account

Option 1: BlueBubbles (Recommended)

AppleScript AutomationFragileHighMac always-on

BlueBubbles is an open-source server that runs on a Mac and exposes iMessage through a REST API.

Requirements:

Setup:

platforms:
  imessage:
    enabled: true
    provider: bluebubbles
    server_url: http://mac-mini.local:1234
    password: "your-bluebubbles-password"
    allowed_contacts:
      - "+1234567890"
      - "friend@icloud.com"

openclaw restart
openclaw doctor --platforms

Features with BlueBubbles:

Send/receive images✅
Group chats✅
Tapbacks (reactions)✅
Read receipts✅
Typing indicators✅

Option 2: Matrix Bridge

Link previews❌

Matrix is an open protocol for decentralized communication. Bridges connect Matrix to other platforms, including iMessage.

platforms:
  matrix:
    enabled: true
    homeserver: https://matrix.example.com
    user_id: "@openclaw:example.com"
    access_token: "syt_..."
    bridge:
      imessage: true
      signal: true
      whatsapp: true

This approach requires running a Matrix homeserver (e.g., Synapse) with the mautrix-imessage bridge.

Option 3: AppleScript (Not Recommended)

For simple setups, you can use AppleScript to monitor and send iMessage messages. This is fragile and not recommended for production use:

platforms:
  imessage:
    enabled: true
    provider: applescript
    check_interval: 5           # Poll every 5 seconds

Signal Integration

Signal is a privacy-focused messenger. OpenClaw integrates through the signal-cli tool:

Setup

# Install signal-cli
brew install signal-cli   # macOS
# or download from https://github.com/AsamK/signal-cli

# Register a phone number
signal-cli -u +1234567890 register
signal-cli -u +1234567890 verify 123-456

Configuration

platforms:
  signal:
    enabled: true
    phone_number: "+1234567890"
    signal_cli_path: /usr/local/bin/signal-cli
    allowed_contacts:
      - "+0987654321"
    group_mode: mention # respond when mentioned in groups

SMS Integration

Voice notes✅ (with STT)

For basic SMS support, use Twilio:

platforms:
  sms:
    enabled: true
    provider: twilio
    phone_number: "+1234567890"
    twilio_account_sid: "AC..."
    twilio_auth_token: "..."
    allowed_numbers:
      - "+0987654321"

SMS limitations:

Custom Platform Integration

OpenClaw provides a webhook-based API for connecting any chat system:

Incoming Webhook (Receive Messages)

# Send a message to OpenClaw via HTTP
curl -X POST http://localhost:3120/api/message \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer your-api-key" \
  -d '{
    "platform": "custom",
    "user_id": "user123",
    "message": "What is the weather today?",
    "conversation_id": "conv456"
  }'

Outgoing Webhook (Send Responses)

Configure a webhook URL where OpenClaw sends responses:

platforms:
  custom:
    enabled: true
    webhook_url: https://your-app.com/openclaw-response
    api_key: "your-api-key"
    headers:
      X-Custom-Header: "value"

WebSocket Integration

For real-time bidirectional communication:

platforms:
  websocket:
    enabled: true
    port: 3121
    path: /ws
    auth: api_key

Connect with any WebSocket client:

const ws = new WebSocket("ws://localhost:3121/ws?key=your-api-key");

ws.send(JSON.stringify({
  user_id: "user123",
  message: "Hello, OpenClaw!"
}));

ws.onmessage = (event) => {
  const response = JSON.parse(event.data);
  console.log(response.message);
};

Signal: Registration Failed

Signal requires a phone number that can receive SMS for verification. VoIP numbers usually don't work. Use a real SIM card.
